* Well, we have endured two major storms with the possibility of a Nor'easter developing this Friday! What a year.
* We had our first frost Monday morning. This accompanied with the below average high temperatures we are experiencing has shut down the Bermuda growth.
* The Bermuda greens are at their winter mowing height.
* Our next big challenge will be leaf removal, which typically takes us into the Christmas Holidays.
Ford's Colony Country Club is a multi-course facility that consist of three courses: Black Heath, Marsh Hawk, and Blue Heron. The purpose of this blog is to ensure membership is aware and informed about maintenance practices and their purposes for maintaining turf health and playability for the game of golf. 10/11/18
* We are cleaning drains/drop inlets in preparation of the rain associated with Tropical Depression Michael
* This time of year, we raise the height of cut on our Bermuda fairways and tees in order to give more "cushion" for the colder temperatures of winter. The height will be raised from .500" to .750"
As I mentioned in an earlier post this height adjustment includes the Champion greens which will be raised to .180"
* I received a few emails with regards to a soft, almost clear mass floating in a couple ponds. A picture was sent to Solitude Lake Management for identification. The mass is a microorganism also known as a fresh water sponge. The sponges are an indication of healthy water and of no concern

The drier weather is helping us get the rough mowed, but we are still experiencing mechanical issues. I'm excited to report we have hired a second mechanic who will begin next week. This will greatly improve the quality of cut on all surfaces.

With the Member/Guest complete our focus is now on the thin areas on greens
It is now October and time for us to prep our Bermuda greens for winter. As we do this you will notice the green speeds varying day to day. This process includes raising mowing heights, and decreasing some of our chemical applications. All of this necessary to avoid the issues many of the Carolina courses had this past year.
With the cooler temperatures we now have a fighting chance to repair the thin areas on Blackheath's greens as well. There will be a more aggressive seeding and watering schedule. Please do your best to avoid these areas and I apologize in advance for the inconvenience.
