Winter Storm Jonas the Williamsburg area was hit with roughly 3-4
inches of snow, sleet, and rain. This weather event forced the golf course to
close due to unsafe cart paths and snow/ice covered greens for more than a
week. Despite sunny days and daily temperatures above freezing following the
winter storm, areas on the course, mostly shaded greens, remained buried below
a thick layer of ice.
Below is BlackHeath #7 which remained under snow and ice until the
afternoon of Monday, February 1st, when temperatures reached into
the 70’s, more than a week after the storm.
Below is a picture of the maintenance staff removing snow and ice from
Hawk greens on Sunday, January 31st.
Fun Facts:
This picture below shows greens at Augusta National
during a snow storm with no snow on greens. A few years ago Augusta National
installed a heating system that uses tubing that runs below the green that
heats the soil to above freezing, preventing any snow accumulation on the
green.
