Aerification
is needed to relieve compaction, remove thatch, create channels for oxygen,
nutrients, and water to enter the root zone and to prevent detrimental gases
from building up in the soil. To take
advantage of the many benefits aerification provides, there has been an
additional date added to the Marsh Hawk and Blackheath greens. We strive to give you the best putting
surfaces that we can throughout the year.
In the picture
below you can see a previous aerification hole, as indicated by the red arrow. The
yellow arrow indicates the thatch layer or in other words a layer of dead
grass. A thick thatch layer can lead to a soft, spongy green that has thin turf
coverage and is undesirable to play.
